From his teenage years, he was handicapped by profound deafness yet he overcame this to reach the highest pinnacles of scientific achievement. His work was carried out in several different research centres, both academic and medical, and he was a leading figure in all.<br>The authors of this memoir decided at the outset that we should cover his personal biography and his scientific work in largely separate sections.
